SECTION I

1. Trace how Africa came into being.

The continent of Africa came into being through a complex geological and geographical process that unfolded over millions of years. The formation of Africa, like the rest of the Earth’s continents, is the result of plate tectonics and the movements of the Earth’s lithosphere. Here is a simplified overview of how Africa came into existence:

  1. Early Earth: Around 4.6 billion years ago, the Earth formed from cosmic dust and gas. Initially, the planet’s surface was a molten mass. As it cooled, the outermost layer, known as the lithosphere, began to solidify.
  2. Supercontinents: Over geological time, Earth’s lithosphere has constantly shifted and reorganized itself through the movement of tectonic plates. Continents are not fixed but have repeatedly collided and separated to form supercontinents. One of the earliest supercontinents, called Rodinia, existed over a billion years ago.
  3. Gondwana: About 600 million years ago, during the Neoproterozoic era, another supercontinent called Gondwana began to form. Gondwana included the landmasses that would eventually become South America, Antarctica, India, Australia, and Africa, among others.
  4. Breakup of Gondwana: Over the course of hundreds of millions of years, Gondwana began to break apart. The separation of landmasses was driven by the movement of tectonic plates. Africa’s current position and shape were shaped by the breakup of Gondwana.
  5. Rifting: The process of continental breakup and the formation of ocean basins is known as rifting. Rifting involves the gradual separation of landmasses along fault lines and the creation of rift valleys. In the case of Africa, the East African Rift system is a significant example of ongoing rifting.
  6. Geological Changes: The geological evolution of Africa involved the opening of the Red Sea, the formation of the African Rift Valley, and the development of numerous mountain ranges, including the Atlas Mountains in the northwest and the Drakensberg Mountains in the south.
  7. Plate Movements: The African Plate is a major tectonic plate that includes most of the continent of Africa. It is surrounded by other plates, such as the Eurasian Plate, the Arabian Plate, and the South American Plate. The interactions between these plates continue to shape the African continent.
  8. Continental Drift: The movement of continents is an ongoing process. Africa is still moving, albeit at a slow pace, due to the ongoing movement of tectonic plates. This movement can lead to geological changes, including earthquakes and volcanic activity.
  9. Formation of Landforms: The movement of tectonic plates, combined with erosion and other geological processes, has resulted in the diverse landscapes of Africa, including mountain ranges, deserts, savannas, and coastal regions.

The creation of the African continent is part of the larger story of Earth’s geological and geographical history. It reflects the dynamic nature of our planet, where continents are constantly in motion, shaped by the forces of plate tectonics and geological processes. Africa’s current size, shape, and position are the result of millions of years of these natural processes.

2. Describe the patterns of colonization in Africa.
3. Examine Neo-colonialism as the new tactics of imperialism in Africa.
4. Discuss the crisis of legitimacy of the state in Africa.
5. Delineate the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and development in Africa.
