SECTION A
1. Explain the concept of self. Differentiate it from self-esteem and self-efficacy.
The concept of “self” refers to the individual’s understanding and perception of their own identity, which encompasses various aspects of their psychological and social existence. It involves a multifaceted view of who you are, how you relate to the world, and how you define yourself within the context of your experiences, values, beliefs, and social roles. The concept of “self” can be differentiated from “self-esteem” and “self-efficacy” as follows:
- Self:
- Definition: Self is a broad and inclusive concept that encompasses the entire range of an individual’s self-perception, including their thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, identity, and social roles. It represents a person’s overall sense of self, which can be complex and multifaceted.
- Components: The self includes various components such as self-concept, self-identity, self-awareness, self-perception, and self-acceptance. It involves a deep understanding of one’s individuality, both in terms of internal (emotional and cognitive) and external (social and cultural) factors.
- Self-Esteem:
- Definition: Self-esteem is a specific aspect of the self that relates to a person’s evaluation of their self-worth and self-value. It reflects how much an individual values themselves and how positively or negatively they regard their own abilities, qualities, and accomplishments.
- Focus: Self-esteem is primarily concerned with the emotional and evaluative dimension of the self. It addresses questions like, “Do I like myself? Am I worthy of love and respect? How confident do I feel about my abilities?”
- Self-Efficacy:
- Definition: Self-efficacy is another specific aspect of the self that pertains to an individual’s belief in their ability to perform specific tasks or achieve particular goals. It reflects a person’s confidence in their own competence and capacity to successfully complete tasks.
- Focus: Self-efficacy is centered on an individual’s perceived ability to perform certain actions or achieve specific outcomes. It addresses questions like, “Do I believe I can succeed in this particular task or situation? How capable do I feel in handling challenges?”
In summary, while “self” is a broad and encompassing concept that reflects an individual’s entire self-perception, including identity, beliefs, values, and social roles, “self-esteem” is a specific aspect related to self-worth and self-value, and “self-efficacy” is a specific aspect concerning an individual’s belief in their ability to perform specific tasks or achieve particular goals. These concepts are interrelated and collectively contribute to an individual’s self-concept and overall self-perception, but they focus on different dimensions of the self.
