IGNOU MLI 003 Question Paper

I) Answer any two of the following in not more than 1000 words each

Q1) Explain the different stages of System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and describe the requirements for system development.

The System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a framework used in software engineering to describe the process of planning, creating, testing, and deploying an information system. There are several stages in the SDLC, each with its own set of activities and deliverables:

Planning: This stage involves defining the project scope, objectives, and requirements. Key activities include identifying stakeholders, conducting feasibility studies, and creating a project plan. The output of this stage is a project charter or initiation document.

Analysis: During this stage, the system requirements are thoroughly analyzed and documented. This includes gathering information from stakeholders, defining user needs, and creating functional and non-functional requirements specifications. Techniques such as interviews, surveys, and workshops are commonly used to gather requirements.

Design: In this stage, the system architecture and design are developed based on the requirements gathered in the analysis phase. This includes creating system diagrams, data models, user interface designs, and detailed specifications for software components. The goal is to create a blueprint for building the system.

Implementation: This stage involves building the system according to the design specifications. Developers write code, configure hardware and software components, and integrate third-party systems if necessary. Testing is also performed during this stage to ensure that the system functions as expected.

Testing: Testing is a crucial stage where the system is evaluated to identify and fix defects or bugs. Various testing techniques, such as unit testing, integration testing, system testing, and user acceptance testing, are used to validate the system against the requirements and ensure its quality.

Deployment: Once testing is complete and the system is deemed ready for production, it is deployed to the end-users’ environment. This involves installing the system, configuring it for production use, and providing training and support to users.

Maintenance: The final stage of the SDLC involves maintaining and supporting the system throughout its lifecycle. This includes monitoring its performance, addressing user feedback, fixing bugs, and implementing updates and enhancements as needed.

Functional Requirements: These define the specific functions or features that the system must provide to meet user needs. Functional requirements describe what the system should do, such as processing transactions, generating reports, or managing user accounts.

Non-functional Requirements: These specify the quality attributes or constraints that the system must satisfy, such as performance, reliability, security, and usability. Non-functional requirements describe how the system should perform or behave, rather than what it should do.

User Requirements: These represent the needs and preferences of the system’s end-users. User requirements are gathered through interviews, surveys, and observations, and they help ensure that the system is designed with the user in mind.

System Requirements: These describe the technical specifications and constraints that the system must adhere to. This includes hardware and software requirements, compatibility with existing systems, and scalability to accommodate future growth.

Regulatory Requirements: Depending on the industry and the nature of the system, there may be legal or regulatory requirements that the system must comply with. These could include data privacy regulations, industry standards, or government mandates.

By carefully documenting and managing these requirements throughout the SDLC, organizations can ensure that the resulting system meets the needs of its users, performs reliably, and complies with relevant regulations and standards.

Q2) What is a digital library? Discuss the major issues and challenges involved in its development.

Q3) Define a Database Management System (DBMS). Describe the logical/ conceptual structure of a DBMS.
