(i) Narrative

A narrative is a story. The term can be used as a noun or an adjective. As a noun, narrative refers to the story being told. It is the account of events, experiences, and details. It also refers to the story-telling process. As an adjective, it describes the form or style of the story being told.

The adjective use of the word narrative has its roots in the Latin word, narrativus, which means “suited to narration.” The noun usage of the word appeared in the French language in the 15^th century and is defined as “a tale, story.” The essay you wrote, entitled “What I did on my summer vacation”, was a narrative. An article written by a blogger about his/her experience travelling across the United States on a bicycle would most likely be a narrative.

Contemporary/realistic fiction: Though issue-driven books, as well as dramatic family sagas, will always be staples of this genre, this is a great time for more lighthearted and comedic books to break out. Now more than ever, readers and agents alike are craving escapism and happier times. If you’ve written a feel-good story, this may be its time to shine!

Science fiction/fantasy: In the past year many readers have wanted to escape current events — and what better way than to get swept up in a fantastic tale? If your world-building is rich and believable, your fantasy novel may be just what agents and readers are looking for. Keep in mind, though, that the fantasy market is increasingly tight, so you should take extra caution to ensure your science fiction or fantasy novel is different from others — for example, we’ve seen so many court fantasies recently (fantasy novels focusing on royalties and kingdoms) that something similar may be a tough sell.

(iv) Characterisation

Characterisation is the creation of persons or other characters or creatures in a narrative and dramatic work. It is also called character development. This creative representation may include direct methods like the infusion of qualities in a descriptive manner, and indirect or “dramatic” methods that may invite the readers to infer qualities from characters’ actions, dialogue, or appearance.

By giving details on a character’s personality, the author helps readers understand that character more accurately just like how we know a real person. By showing how they respond to different situations, the author introduces their nature, traits and gives a glimpse of their view on different topics.

Let’s say that John is a jerk at the beginning of a particular story, but at the end he is a kind and forgiving young man that he became after someone showed him how he makes others feel. The theme is probably “You should treat others as you would like yourself to be treated,” or something similar. Assuming John is the main character.

(iv) Theme

As a literary device, theme refers to the central, deeper meaning of a written work. Writers typically will convey the theme of their work, and allow the reader to perceive and interpret it, rather than overtly or directly state the theme. As readers infer, reflect, and analyze a literary theme, they develop a greater understanding of the work itself and can apply this understanding beyond the literary work as a means of grasping a better sense of the world. Theme is often what creates a memorable and significant experience of a literary work for the reader. Themes are often subject to the reader’s perception and interpretation. This means that readers may find primary and/or secondary themes in a work of literature that the author didn’t intend to convey. Therefore, theme allows for literature to remain meaningful, “living” works that can be revisited and analyzed in perpetuity by many readers at once or by a single reader across time.
