History Of SRM University

The early years (1969-1984)
- 1969: The foundation stone is laid with the establishment of Florence Nightingale Primary School, marking the initial step towards the educational endeavor.
- 1981: The school expands to become Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
- 1984: Valliammai Polytechnic Institute is launched, offering vocational training opportunities.
Birth of SRM Engineering College and beyond (1985-1999)
- 1985: SRM Engineering College, the cornerstone of what is now SRM University, is established in Kattankulathur, Chennai.
- 1992-1997: A period of rapid expansion sees the launch of several new colleges under the SRM banner, including Nursing, Pharmacy, Hotel Management, Management, and Physiotherapy.
Evolving into a Deemed University and beyond (2000-present)
- 2002: SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) is granted Deemed University status, recognizing its significant contributions to academics and research.
- 2003: SRM Engineering College is brought under the ambit of SRMIST, officially integrating it into the larger university structure.
- 2006: SRMIST is permitted to use the designation “University” (as per UGC regulations), leading to it being formally known as SRM University.
- 2017: SRM University AP is established in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, expanding the institution’s footprint beyond Tamil Nadu.
- 2017: Following UGC’s request, SRM University reverts to its original name, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST).
