PART A

Answer the following in 200 words each:

Q1. Explain Probability Sampling.

Probability sampling is a sampling technique in which every individual or element in a population has a known and non-zero chance of being selected in the sample. The fundamental principle behind probability sampling is that each member of the population has an equal or known likelihood of being included in the sample, which allows for the calculation of statistical measures of accuracy and reliability.

There are several types of probability sampling methods:

  1. Simple Random Sampling:
    • Every individual in the population has an equal chance of being selected.
    • This can be achieved through methods like drawing names from a hat, using random number generators, or employing a randomization procedure.
  2. Stratified Random Sampling:
    • The population is divided into subgroups or strata based on certain characteristics.
    • Random samples are then taken from each stratum in proportion to its presence in the overall population.
    • This method ensures representation from all relevant subgroups.
  3. Systematic Sampling:
    • A random start point is selected, and then every kth individual is chosen to be part of the sample.
    • The value of “k” is determined by dividing the population size by the desired sample size.
  4. Cluster Sampling:
    • The population is divided into clusters, and then a random sample of clusters is selected.
    • All individuals within the chosen clusters are included in the sample.
    • This method is useful when it’s impractical to sample individuals individually.
  5. Multistage Sampling:
    • Combines several stages of sampling.
    • For example, in a multistage sampling design, clusters are first chosen, then subclusters within those clusters, and finally individuals within those subclusters.

Probability sampling is preferred in research because it provides a basis for making statistical inferences about the population from which the sample was drawn. It allows researchers to estimate the precision of their results and make valid generalizations beyond the sample to the larger population. This stands in contrast to non-probability sampling methods, where the likelihood of any particular individual being chosen for the sample is unknown or unequal.

Q2. What is sampling error? List two major non-sampling errors.

Q3. What do mean ‘Gross Enrolment Rate’? How would you find out the national GER for upper primary level?

Q4. How do you use email in your research? Explain.

PART B

Answer any two of the questions given below in 1000 words each.

Q1. Prepare a research design for any research topic chosen by you. Please go through Unit 14 to recall the steps in research design.

Q2. Explain the features of feminist method with examples.

Q3. What is research? Describe different types of research and their use at the level of techniques.
