1. Explain the concept of self. Differentiate it from self-esteem and self-efficacy.
The concept of “self” refers to an individual’s sense of identity and awareness of their own existence as a separate and unique entity. It encompasses one’s beliefs, thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and experiences that contribute to a coherent sense of who they are. The self is not a fixed or unchanging entity; rather, it evolves and develops over time through interactions with the environment, relationships, and personal reflections.
Differentiating between the concepts of self, self-esteem, and self-efficacy:
- Self: The self is a broad and complex concept that encompasses all aspects of an individual’s identity, both internal (thoughts, emotions, beliefs) and external (appearance, roles, relationships). It involves understanding one’s values, goals, strengths, weaknesses, and personal experiences. The self is deeply connected to one’s consciousness and shapes how they perceive the world and their place in it.
- Self-Esteem: Self-esteem refers to an individual’s overall evaluation of their own worth and value. It involves how positively or negatively a person views themselves, how much they believe they are deserving of love, respect, and success. Self-esteem is closely tied to self-image and can impact an individual’s emotional well-being. People with high self-esteem generally have a positive self-perception, whereas those with low self-esteem may struggle with self-doubt and negative self-judgments.
- Self-Efficacy: Self-efficacy pertains to an individual’s belief in their ability to successfully accomplish specific tasks, achieve goals, or handle challenges. It is a narrower concept than self-esteem and is more focused on one’s confidence in their abilities to perform certain actions. Self-efficacy is influenced by past experiences, skills, knowledge, and the perceived level of control over the situation. People with high self-efficacy are more likely to approach tasks with enthusiasm and persistence, while those with low self-efficacy might avoid challenges due to fear of failure.
In summary, the concept of self encompasses an individual’s entire identity and sense of being, while self-esteem relates to how positively or negatively one views themselves in general. Self-efficacy, on the other hand, specifically deals with an individual’s confidence in their ability to perform certain tasks or achieve specific goals. These three concepts are interconnected and play crucial roles in shaping an individual’s behavior, emotions, and overall well-being.
