SECTION A

Answer the following question in about 1000 words (wherever applicable) each 15×3=45 Marks

1. Describe the meaning of inferential statistics and focus on hypothesis testing.

Inferential Statistics

Inferential statistics helps to suggest explanations for a situation or phenomenon. It allows you to draw conclusions supported extrapolations, and is therein way fundamentally different from descriptive statistics that merely summarize the info that has actually been measured. allow us to return to our party example. Say comparative statistics suggest that parties hosted by your friend Sophia are very successful (e.g., the typical number of attendees and therefore the median duration of her parties are greater than those of other parties). Your next questions may be: Why are her parties so successful? Is it the food she serves, the dimensions of her social network, the prestige of her job, the amount of men or women she knows, her physical attractiveness, the alcohol she provides, or the situation and size of her residence? Inferential statistics may assist you answer these questions. Finding that less well-attended parties had on the average fewer drinks served would suggest that your friend Sophia’s drinks could be the important factor. The differences attending and drinks served between her parties and other parties would need to be large enough to draw any conclusions.

Note that the inferential statistics usually suggest but cannot absolutely prove an evidence or cause-and-effect relationship. Inferential comes from the word infer. To infer is to conclude or judge from premises or evidence (American Heritage Dictionary) and to not prove. Often inferential statistics help to draw conclusions about a whole population by watching only a sample of the population. Inferential statistics frequently involves estimation (i.e., guessing the characteristics of a population from a sample of the population) and hypothesis testing (i.e., finding evidence for or against an evidence or theory).

Statistics describe and analyze variables. We discuss measures and variables in greater detail in Chapter 4. A variable may be a measured characteristic or attribute which will assume different values. A variable could also be quantitative (e.g., height) or categorical (e.g., eye color). Variables could also be independent (the value it assumes isn’t suffering from the other variables) or dependent (the value it assumes is pre-determined by other variables). Variables aren’t inherently independent or dependent. An experimental variable in one statistical model could also be hooked in to another. for instance , assume that we’ve a statistical model to spot the explanation for heart condition . Independent variables would be risk factors for heart disease: cigarettes smoked per day, drinks per day, and cholesterol level. The presence of heart condition would be a dependent value. the danger factor variables affect the presence of heart condition .

Statistical methods can analyze one variable at a time (i.e., univariate analysis) or quite one variable together at an equivalent time (i.e., multivariate analysis). Bivariate analysis is analyzing two variables together. An example of a univariate analysis would be simply watching the death rate (mortality) in several countries. An example of a bivariate analysis would be analyzing the connection between alcoholism and mortality.

Errors in Statistical Hypothesis Testing—Type I and sort II Errors

Inferential statistics provide a quantitative method to make a decision if the null hypothesis (H0) should be rejected. Since H0 must be either true or false, there are only two possible correct outcomes in an inferential test; correct rejection of H0 when it’s false, and retaining H0 when it’s true. Therefore, there are two possible errors which will be made which are termed Type I and sort II errors. a kind I error occurs when H0 is incorrectly rejected. this is often commonly termed a false positive. a kind II error occurs when H0 is retained when it’s actually false. This error is usually termed a false negative. From the standpoint of reproducibility, knowing the probability of creating a kind I or type II error is important . This probability depends on experimental design and execution, and on the sample size, once more highlighting the importance of power analysis.

Inferential statistics

Inferential statistics describe the various ways during which statistics derived from observations on samples from study populations are often wont to deduce whether or not those populations are truly different. an outsized number of statistical tests are often used for this purpose; which test is employed depends on the sort of knowledge being analyzed and therefore the number of groups involved. In medicine generally, and in anesthesia especially , we are often concerned with drug effects and whether or not a replacement drug is as effective as a currently available treatment. Studies designed to answer these questions believe inferential statistics to support or refute the prevalence of 1 treatment over another. First a null hypothesis, H0, is proposed, which takes the shape of a written statement or a mathematical expression.

GUIDELINES FOR MPC 006 Solved Assignment:-

You will find it useful to keep the following points in mind:

1. Planning: Read the questions carefully. Go through the units on which they are based. Make some points regarding each question and then rearrange these in a logical order. And please write the answers in your own words. Do not reproduce passages from the units.

2. Organisation: Be a little more selective and analytic before drawing up a rough outline of your answer. In an essay-type question, give adequate attention to your introduction and conclusion. The introduction must offer your brief interpretation of the question and how you propose to develop it. The conclusion must summarise your response to the question. In the course of your answer, you may like to make references to other texts or critics as this will add some depth to your analysis.

Please ensure the following before submitting your assignment :

1. Your enrolment number, name and address have been written correctly.
2. The title of the course and assignment number has been written clearly.
3. Each assignment on each course has been written on separate sheets and pinned properly.
4. All the questions in a particular section should be answered before attempting the next
section.
