SECTION I

Q1. Critically examine Gandhian approach to understand social problems.

Gandhian approach to understanding social problems is based on a set of principles and beliefs that Mahatma Gandhi, the preeminent leader of Indian independence movement, advocated. Here’s a critical examination of the Gandhian approach to understanding social problems:

Emphasis on Self-reliance: Gandhi believed in the principle of self-reliance. He emphasized the development of local economies and cottage industries to empower individuals and communities. While this approach can foster economic independence, it may not be sufficient to address complex social problems in modern, interconnected societies.

Non-violence and Peaceful Resistance: Gandhi’s philosophy was deeply rooted in the principle of non-violence (ahimsa). He believed that non-violent resistance was the most effective means to address social injustice. While non-violence is a powerful tool for social change, its efficacy can vary depending on the context. In some situations, it may not be enough to counter deeply entrenched social problems.

Satyagraha (Truth Force): Gandhi believed in the power of truth and moral authority to bring about social change. Satyagraha, or nonviolent resistance, was based on the idea of appealing to the conscience of the oppressor. However, the success of Satyagraha depends on the willingness of the oppressor to listen to reason, which may not always be the case.

Emphasis on Swadeshi and Swaraj: Gandhi advocated for Swadeshi, or self-sufficiency, and Swaraj, or self-rule. He believed that political and economic independence were essential for addressing social problems. While these principles are important, they may not be sufficient to address all social issues, especially in a globalized world where interconnectedness is inevitable.



Focus on Moral and Spiritual Values: Gandhi emphasized the importance of moral and spiritual values in addressing social problems. He believed that individuals should strive for self-purification and cultivate a sense of moral responsibility towards society. While moral and spiritual values are important, they may not be enough to address complex social problems that are often rooted in structural inequalities and systemic injustices.

Critique of Industrialization and Modernization: Gandhi was critical of industrialization and modernization, which he believed were responsible for many social problems. While there is merit in his critique, it is also important to recognize the benefits of industrialization and modernization, such as increased productivity, technological advancement, and higher standards of living for many people.

In conclusion, while Gandhi’s approach to understanding social problems was based on noble principles such as non-violence, self-reliance, and moral values, it may not be sufficient to address all the complexities of modern society. While his ideas continue to inspire social movements around the world, it is important to critically examine and adapt them to the specific context and challenges of the present day.
