Q1. What do you understand by Modernity and Post- Modernity?

Modernity is associated with the Enlightenment, industrialization, urbanization, and the rise of nation-states.
Key features include belief in universal truths, linear progress, and grand narratives.
Postmodernity is a term used to describe the period following modernity, typically from the late 20th century to the present.
It is characterized by skepticism towards grand narratives and meta-narratives.
Postmodernism questions the stability of truth, the reliability of language, and the nature of reality.
It is associated with globalization, consumerism, digital technology, and the breakdown of traditional social structures.
Postmodernity embraces diversity, pluralism, and the idea that truth is subjective and context-dependent.
In essence, modernity represents a belief in progress, reason, and universal truth, while postmodernity questions these ideas and emphasizes the relativity of truth, the complexity of reality, and the importance of multiple perspectives.
Q2. According to Gandhi, women are custodians of values and culture. Substantiate your arguments.
Mahatma Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement, held a deep respect for women and recognized their significant role in society. Gandhi’s views on women as custodians of values and culture can be substantiated through several of his writings, speeches, and actions:
Respect for Women’s Role in Family and Society: Gandhi emphasized the crucial role that women play in nurturing families and maintaining social values. He believed that women have a unique ability to instill values and morals in their children, thus shaping the future of society.
Empowerment through Self-reliance: Gandhi was an advocate for women’s empowerment through self-reliance and self-respect. He encouraged women to participate actively in the struggle for independence and believed that they should be educated and economically independent.
Promotion of Women’s Rights: Gandhi campaigned for women’s rights, including their right to education, employment, and participation in the political process. He believed that women should have equal opportunities and rights as men.
Emphasis on Non-violence and Compassion: Gandhi associated women with values such as non-violence, compassion, and empathy. He believed that women, as nurturers, were more inclined towards peace and harmony.
Examples from Gandhi’s Life: Gandhi’s own life reflected his respect for women. He often involved women in the Indian independence movement, and many women, such as Sarojini Naidu and Kasturba Gandhi, played significant roles in his campaigns.
Gandhi’s writings and speeches: In many of his writings and speeches, Gandhi highlighted the importance of women in preserving the values and culture of society. For example, he once said, “To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?”
These points substantiate Gandhi’s belief that women are custodians of values and culture, as he recognized their significant contributions to the betterment of society.
