a. Structure of the atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of several layers, each with distinct characteristics and functions. These layers are, from the surface of the Earth outward:

  1. Troposphere:
    • The closest layer to the Earth’s surface, extending up to approximately 8-15 kilometers (5-9 miles) depending on the location and season.
    • Contains the majority of the Earth’s weather phenomena, including clouds, precipitation, and convection currents.
    • Temperature generally decreases with altitude in this layer.
  2. Stratosphere:
    • Above the troposphere, extending from about 15 to 50 kilometers (9-31 miles) above the Earth’s surface.
    • Contains the ozone layer, which absorbs and protects against the majority of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.
    • Temperature generally increases with altitude due to the absorption of solar radiation by the ozone layer.
  3. Mesosphere:
    • Extending from about 50 to 85 kilometers (31-53 miles) above the Earth’s surface.
    • Characterized by a decrease in temperature with altitude.
    • This layer is where most meteorites burn up upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
  4. Thermosphere:
    • Extending from about 85 kilometers (53 miles) to the exosphere, which has no well-defined upper limit.
    • The temperature in this layer increases significantly with altitude due to the absorption of high-energy solar radiation.
    • Home to the ionosphere, where charged particles are abundant and play a role in the reflection of radio waves.
  5. Exosphere:
    • The outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, where the atmosphere transitions into outer space.
    • Contains a low density of particles, and individual gas molecules can travel hundreds of kilometers without colliding with one another.
    • The boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and space is not precisely defined, but the exosphere is where atmospheric particles gradually become sparse.

These layers collectively form the Earth’s atmosphere, providing a protective shield and supporting various life-sustaining processes on the planet. The different characteristics of each layer contribute to the dynamic and complex system that regulates our climate and weather.
