Q1. Critically comment on the following passages with reference to the context, in not more than 150 words each:
(a) O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven, It had the primal eldest curse upon’t A brother’s murder! Pray can I not. Though inclination be as sharp as will.
O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven”: Claudius acknowledges the severity of his crime. He uses strong words like “rank” (meaning rotten or excessive) to describe it, and imagines the stench reaching the heavens.
“It hath the primal eldest curse upon’t, A brother’s murder!”: He recognizes his act as one of the worst sins, comparable to the “primal eldest curse,” referencing the biblical story of Cain murdering his brother Abel.
“Pray can I not, Though inclination be as sharp as will”: Claudius desires to pray for forgiveness, but feels an inability to do so. His “inclination” (desire) is strong, but his “guilt” prevents him.
This soliloquy is a turning point in the play, as Claudius reveals his inner torment and contemplates the possibility of redemption, which he ultimately rejects.
(b) Galatea never does quite like Pygmalion: relation to her is too godlike to be altogether agreeable.
That’s a fascinating quote! It comes from the preface to George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, which reimagines the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea.
In the original myth, Pygmalion is a sculptor who falls in love with a statue he creates, Galatea. A goddess brings the statue to life, and Pygmalion and Galatea live happily ever after.
Shaw’s take is more complex. He suggests that Galatea might not be entirely happy with the situation. Here’s why:
Power Imbalance: Pygmalion, as the creator, holds a position of power over Galatea. This dynamic can be stifling for a relationship.
Loss of Agency: Galatea’s existence and transformation depend on Pygmalion’s will. This can make it difficult for her to feel truly independent.
Resentment: Even if grateful, Galatea might resent being Pygmalion’s “project” rather than an equal partner.
The quote suggests that a healthy relationship requires mutual respect and agency. Galatea likely craves an equal footing, something Pygmalion’s “godlike” status prevents.
This quote comes from George Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion.” In the context of the play, Galatea is a reference to Eliza Doolittle, the flower girl who is transformed into a refined lady by Professor Henry Higgins. Pygmalion is the sculptor from Greek mythology who fell in love with his own creation, Galatea, whom he carved out of ivory.
The quote reflects the idea that even though Eliza is grateful for the transformation Professor Higgins brings about in her life, she is also uncomfortable with the power dynamics inherent in their relationship. Higgins treats her like an object of his creation rather than an equal partner. This quote highlights the complexities of their relationship and suggests that while Eliza appreciates the changes, she is also wary of the implications of being controlled and manipulated by Higgins.
(c) What boots it then to think of God or heaven ? Away with such fancies and despair; Despairin God, and trust in Beelzebub … Abjure this magic, turn to God again.
(d) Astride of a grave and a difficult birth
