  1. Discuss Eugene O’Neill’s contribution to modern American Drama. . 20

O’Neill is the only American playwright to have won the Nobel prize for literature, and the only dramatist to have won four Pulitzer prizes. He introduced cerebral and social literalism to the American stage; he was among the foremost to use American conversational, and to concentrate on characters marginalised by society. BeforeO’Neill, American theatre comported of psychodrama and farce; he was the first US playwright to take drama seriously as an aesthetic and intellectual form. He took it veritably seriously indeed; one can not chargeO’Neill of frivolousness. Of further than 50 finished plays,O’Neill wrote just one putative comedy, Ah, Nature!( 1933), and indeed its plot hinges on drunkenness, harlotry, vengeance and repressed desire. Of course, utmost ofO’Neill’s plays involve drunkenness, harlotry, vengeance and repressed desire; Ah, Nature! is the only bone

His first popular megahit was The Emperor Jones in 1920, followed by a string of plays including Anna Christie and Desire Under the Elms in 1924. That same time also saw All God’s Chillun Got bodies, a groundbreaking disquisition of interracial relations that provoked hate correspondence and lemon pitfalls. Strange interim won a Pulitzer in 1928; three times latterlyO’Neill finished Mourning Becomes Electra. In 1936 he was awarded the Nobel; 10 times latterly, he produced The Iceman Cometh, followed nearly by A Moon for the Baseborn; both were inadequately entered. He failed in 1953, having requested that Long Day’s Journey Into Night be withheld from the stage until 25 times after his death. His widow published it three times latterly; it was first offered in 1957, and recognised incontinently as a triumph, winningO’Neill his final, postmortem Pulitzer and sparking a reanimation.

His significance can hardly be exaggerated withoutO’Neill, there would have been no Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams, let alone David Mamet or Sam Shepard. Yet in general his plays are long, laborious, defiantly demanding;O’Neill told a journalist before The Iceman Cometh opened that he would tried to cut 45 twinkles, but had managed only 15″ It’ll have to run from 8o’clock to whenever it now goddamned pleases – perhaps quarter to 12. still, they’ll have to remain in, because I feel they’re absolutely necessary to what I’m trying to get over, If there are reiterations.”

O’Neill’s jotting was always driven by an autobiographical impulse; by the time he wrote Long Day’s Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten, he was drawing only the lightest robe between the drama and the dramatist, booby-trapping the story of his family’s tortured connections for their universal meanings. The fine line between love and hate is one thatO’Neill’s characters draw and abolish, and draw again rage explodes, is denied, repressed, avoided and also explodes formerly further. Dependence is far and wide, accelerating and heightening the suffering it’s supposed to be assuaging. Guilt, fury, despair, and the symmetrical need for pity, remission, guilt these areO’Neill’s great themes. When one learns about the extraordinary drama ofO’Neill’s early times, it isn’t hard to understand why.

He was born on 17 October 1888, in a hostel in Times Square, New York. His father, JamesO’Neill, was a notorious and popular actor, known for his touring product of The Count of Monte Cristo. EugeneO’Neill’s dramatizations would ultimately reject everything his father’s career symbolised, the melodramatic tradition of saccharinity and cheap heroics, cardboard characters and bloated rhetoric. It was a tradition he knew well the youthful Eugene spent his early times confidentially with his mama and aged family Jamie, as they accompanied James around North America. A middle son, Edmund, had failed as a baby from measles, which he contracted from six- time-old Jamie; the child was indicted of designedly infecting his family and remained guilt- stricken for the rest of his sad, foreshortened life.

After giving birth to Eugene, Mary Ellen( known as Ella)O’Neill was specified morphine for pain and what we’d now callpost-natal depression; she fleetly came addicted. When Eugene was 14, his father and family decided to tell him the verity about his mama ‘s dependence . They feel to have inferred that if it were not for him, none of this mischance would have chanced the family; EugeneO’Neill’s impertinent decision to be born had destroyed his mama . Predictably enough, the youthfulO’Neill began to tone- destruct, comforting himself with alcohol, anesthetics, and hookers. Some hagiographers have asserted that he was an alcoholic by 15; before he was 20, he would intimately married a girl who was pregnant with his child. Two times latterly, overcome by shame, he overdosed on Veronal, a popular and fluently attained anesthetic. A friend got him to the sanitarium, where his stomach was pumped; the experience came the kernel of his one- act play Exorcism, which was believed to have been destroyed until a dupe was set up and published last time.

Not long after,O’Neill was diagnosed with tuberculosis and transferred to a sanitorium; the experience cemented his decision to devote himself to playwriting. He wrote half a dozen apprentice works before Beyond the Horizon established him as a significant voice in American theatre in 1920; his father lived to see his son’s success, and was seen wiping down gashes of pride at the end of the premiere. In lower than a month, still, JamesO’Neill was hospitalised with cancer and failed, sorrowfully, a many months after that. Eighteen months latterly,O’Neill’s mama failed suddenly of a brain excrescence. lower than two times after that, at the age of 45, Jamie succeeded in his frequently- stated end of drinking himself to death; the formerly close sisters were so estranged that Eugene refused to go to the burial or help with the burial arrangements. In just over three times,O’Neill had lost his entire family. In some ways, it could be said that he noway finished mourning death, loss and grief are necessary in his plays; penalty seems eternal. Throughout this period, commonly,O’Neill himself was drinking heavily he’d struggle with depression and illness for the rest of his life; when he won the Nobel prize it had to be brought to him in a sanitarium bed. His final words, reportedly, were” I knew it. I knew it. Born in a hostel room, and God damn it, failed in a hostel room.”
