Underlying causes: These are the deeper, structural factors that contribute to an event. For example, the underlying causes of World War I include militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism.
Long-term causes: These are the broader historical trends and developments that set the stage for an event. For example, the long-term causes of the French Revolution include social inequality, economic hardship, and political discontent.
Multiple causation: Historians recognize that events are often the result of multiple causes working together. For example, the outbreak of World War II can be attributed to a combination of factors, including the Treaty of Versailles, the rise of fascism, and the failure of appeasement.
Historians use causation to construct narratives that explain why events happened the way they did. By identifying the causes of historical events, historians can better understand the past and draw lessons for the present and future. They also use causation to analyze the significance of events and their impact on subsequent historical developments.
