SECTION I

Q1. Why Mahatma Gandhi is called a great Human Ecologist?

Mahatma Gandhi is often referred to as a great Human Ecologist because of his emphasis on sustainable living, harmony with nature, and his advocacy for simple living. Gandhi believed in living in harmony with the environment and promoted the idea of self-sufficiency and sustainability. His principles of non-violence (Ahimsa) and Satyagraha (truth-force) were not only political but also deeply rooted in ecological ethics.

Gandhi’s philosophy encouraged people to live in balance with nature, to use resources wisely, and to avoid excessive consumption. He promoted the idea of village self-sufficiency, where communities would produce their own food, clothing, and other necessities, reducing their reliance on industrialized and centralized systems that harm the environment.

In summary, Gandhi’s emphasis on living in harmony with nature, his advocacy for simple living, and his promotion of self-sufficiency and sustainability are why he is often referred to as a great Human Ecologist.

Q2. Discuss at length Gandhi‟s views of Gram Swaraj?

Gandhi’s concept of “Gram Swaraj” or village self-governance was central to his vision of a just and sustainable society. For Gandhi, Gram Swaraj was not just about political independence from colonial rule, but also about achieving economic self-sufficiency, social harmony, and decentralized governance.

Decentralized Governance: Gandhi believed that the key to India’s progress lay in its villages. He advocated for decentralized governance, where power would be vested in the hands of the villagers themselves. According to him, this would ensure that decision-making was more responsive to the needs of the people.

Self-Sufficiency: Gandhi emphasized the importance of economic self-sufficiency at the village level. He believed that each village should be able to fulfill its own basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter, through local production and resources. This, he argued, would reduce dependence on outside sources and make villages more resilient.

Swadeshi and Self-reliance: Gandhi promoted the idea of “Swadeshi,” which encouraged the use of locally produced goods. He believed that this would not only help in promoting local industries but would also empower the villagers economically. Self-reliance, according to Gandhi, was crucial for achieving independence, both at the individual and national levels.

Social Harmony and Equality: Gandhi envisioned Gram Swaraj as a society where all individuals, regardless of caste, creed, or gender, would have equal rights and opportunities. He fought against the social evils of untouchability and discrimination and emphasized the importance of communal harmony and unity.

Sarvodaya: Gandhi’s concept of Gram Swaraj was closely linked to the idea of “Sarvodaya,” which means the welfare of all. He believed that true progress could only be achieved when the last person in the society was uplifted. Gram Swaraj, therefore, aimed at ensuring the welfare and well-being of every individual in the village.

Training Ground for Democracy: Gandhi saw villages as the ideal training ground for democracy. He believed that by empowering villagers to govern themselves, they would learn the principles of democracy, such as participation, accountability, and equality.

Nucleus of National Life: Gandhi considered villages as the nucleus of national life. He believed that if the villages were strong and prosperous, the entire nation would prosper. Therefore, he emphasized the need to focus on rural development as a means to achieve overall national development.

Spiritual and Moral Centers: Gandhi viewed villages as spiritual and moral centers. He believed that the simplicity and self-reliance of village life fostered moral and spiritual values, which were essential for the well-being of society as a whole.

Peaceful and Sustainable Living: Gandhi believed that village life was more peaceful and sustainable compared to urban life. He advocated for simple living and high thinking and believed that villages offered a more sustainable way of life, in harmony with nature.

While Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj was inspiring, it also faced several challenges:

Industrialization: The rapid industrialization of India posed a significant challenge to Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj. With the growth of industries, there was a tendency for people to migrate from villages to cities in search of better opportunities, leading to the neglect of rural areas.

Technological Advancements: Technological advancements, while beneficial in many ways, also posed a challenge to Gandhi’s vision of a simple and self-reliant village life. Modern technologies often require large-scale infrastructure and centralized control, which goes against the decentralized and self-sufficient model advocated by Gandhi.

Social and Economic Inequality: Despite Gandhi’s efforts to promote social equality, India continues to grapple with deep-rooted social and economic inequalities. Caste-based discrimination, unequal distribution of resources, and lack of access to basic services remain significant challenges to achieving Gram Swaraj.

In conclusion, Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj was not merely a political or economic concept but a comprehensive vision of a just and sustainable society. While many of his ideas remain relevant today, achieving Gram Swaraj continues to be a challenging but worthy goal for India and other nations around the world.

Q3. “Development and Ethics are inseparable”. Comments.

Q5. Examine the relevance of Gandhian life style and livelihoods in the present context.
