Hegemony refers to the dominance of one group over others through consent rather than coercion. Emphasis on Cultural Hegemony: Gramsci’s concept of civil society highlights the importance of cultural hegemony in maintaining the status quo. Unlike coercion, which relies on force, hegemony operates through consent, as individuals willingly accept the values and norms of the ruling class. Potential for Transformation: While Gramsci’s analysis of civil society emphasizes the role it plays in maintaining the status quo, he also recognized its potential as a site of resistance and transformation. Gramsci argued that subordinate groups could challenge hegemony by creating their own counter-hegemonic institutions and forming alliances with other subordinate groups.
