Plato feared that allowing artists to freely express themselves in the ideal state would lead to a proliferation of falsehoods and illusions, which could corrupt the minds of the citizens.
Emotional influence: Plato was concerned about the emotional impact of art on individuals. He believed that poetry, music, and other art forms had the power to evoke strong emotions and desires, which could potentially disrupt the rational harmony of the soul. Plato’s ideal state aimed for a harmonious balance between reason, spirit, and appetite, and he worried that exposure to certain forms of art could inflame passions and undermine this balance.
Influence on morality: Plato argued that art had the potential to shape the moral character of individuals and society as a whole. He was particularly critical of tragic poetry, which often depicted immoral behavior or challenged traditional ethical norms. Plato believed that allowing artists to freely express such ideas could lead to moral corruption and undermine the moral education of citizens in the ideal state.
Priority of philosophy: Above all, Plato prioritized philosophy as the supreme form of knowledge and the guiding principle for the ideal state. He saw philosophy as the pursuit of truth and wisdom, aiming to transcend the illusions of the material world. In contrast, Plato viewed art as a mere imitation of reality, lacking the philosophical depth and insight necessary for the governance of society. Thus, he sought to limit the influence of artists in favor of philosopher-kings who could lead based on reason and wisdom.
In summary, Plato’s desire to exclude artists from the ideal state was driven by concerns about the deceptive nature of art, its potential to disrupt emotional harmony and moral integrity, and its perceived inferiority compared to philosophy as a guiding principle for governance. However, it’s essential to note that Plato’s views on art have been subject to criticism and interpretation over the centuries, with many contemporary scholars offering alternative perspectives on the role of art in society.
