IGNOU MSD 014 Question Paper

Q1. Explain the different stages of Demographic Transition Model.

The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) is a framework used to understand the process of population change over time. It outlines the typical stages that societies go through as they transition from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. These stages are characterized by shifts in birth rates, death rates, and population growth. Here are the main stages of the Demographic Transition Model:

In this stage, both birth rates and death rates are high, resulting in minimal population growth.

This stage is typical of pre-industrial societies where agriculture is the primary economic activity and healthcare and sanitation are limited.

Population growth is slow and fluctuating due to high mortality rates, especially among infants and children.

This stage is marked by a decrease in death rates due to improvements in healthcare, sanitation, and food production. However, birth rates remain high.

Rapid population growth occurs as death rates decline while birth rates remain high. This often leads to a population explosion.

Industrialization and urbanization contribute to these changes, leading to increased life expectancy and better living conditions.

In this stage, birth rates start to decline due to various factors including urbanization, increased education, and access to contraception.

Death rates continue to fall or stabilize at low levels, leading to a steady increase in population size.

The gap between birth rates and death rates narrows, resulting in a slower rate of population growth compared to Stage 2.

Both birth rates and death rates are low in this stage, resulting in minimal population growth or even population decline.

This stage is characteristic of post-industrial societies where contraception is widely available, women have greater educational and employment opportunities, and the cost of raising children is high.

Population aging becomes a significant demographic trend as life expectancy increases and birth rates remain below replacement level.

In this hypothetical stage, birth rates fall below replacement level for an extended period, leading to population decline and population aging.

Countries experiencing this stage may face challenges related to labor shortages, shrinking tax bases, and strains on social welfare systems.

It’s important to note that not all countries follow this model exactly, and variations exist due to cultural, social, economic, and political factors. Additionally, some countries may experience rapid transitions through these stages, while others may remain in a particular stage for a longer period.
