IGNOU BPCG 176 Question Paper

Assignment One

Answer the following questions in about 500 words each.

Q1. Explain gender role attitudes and their measurement. Discuss social role theory of Alice Eagley.

Gender role attitudes refer to the beliefs, norms, and expectations that society holds regarding the appropriate behavior, characteristics, and responsibilities of individuals based on their gender. These attitudes are deeply ingrained within cultures and can vary significantly across different societies and historical periods.

Measuring gender role attitudes involves assessing individuals’ beliefs and perceptions regarding gender roles through various methods, including surveys, interviews, observational studies, and experimental designs. Common measures include Likert scales, where participants rate their level of agreement with statements about gender roles, and open-ended questions that allow respondents to express their views more freely. Researchers may also use standardized scales developed specifically to assess gender role attitudes, such as the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), which measures masculinity, femininity, and androgyny.

Social role theory, proposed by Alice Eagly and colleagues, posits that gender differences in behavior, attitudes, and personality traits primarily arise from societal expectations and the division of labor between men and women. According to this theory, individuals adopt behaviors and characteristics consistent with the roles expected of their gender within society. These roles are shaped by cultural norms, socialization processes, and the division of labor within families, communities, and workplaces.

Eagly’s social role theory suggests that gender differences are not innate but rather emerge as a result of socialization processes and the roles individuals occupy within society. For example, men are often socialized to be assertive, independent, and task-oriented, traits that align with traditional male roles in many societies. In contrast, women are often socialized to be nurturing, empathetic, and relationship-oriented, traits that align with traditional female roles.

Critics of social role theory argue that it oversimplifies the complex interplay between biology and culture in shaping gender differences. They contend that biological factors, such as hormonal influences and evolutionary pressures, also play a significant role in shaping gender differences in behavior and attitudes. Additionally, social role theory has been criticized for reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes and failing to account for individuals who do not conform to traditional gender roles.
