Q1. Critically comment on the following passages with reference to the context, in not more than 150 words each:
(a) O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven, It had the primal eldest curse upon’t A brother’s murder! Pray can I not. Though inclination be as sharp as will.

“O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven,” Claudius is expressing remorse for his grave sin (offence). He believes his wrongdoing is so severe that it reaches up to heaven, suggesting that it is an egregious act that even God would take notice of.
“It had the primal eldest curse upon’t” Here, he suggests that his crime is cursed from the very beginning, carrying the weight of the first and oldest curse. This emphasizes the gravity and inherent evil nature of his actions.
“A brother’s murder! Pray can I not.” Claudius acknowledges the specific nature of his crime: fratricide, the killing of his own brother. He expresses that he cannot pray, possibly feeling unworthy or unable to seek forgiveness through prayer.
