IGNOU MSD 012 Question Paper

Q1. Explain the concept ‘Ecosystem Function’ with suitable examples.

Ecosystem function refers to the processes and activities that occur within an ecosystem, contributing to its stability, resilience, and productivity. These functions are often categorized into various types, including nutrient cycling, primary production, decomposition, and energy flow. Here are some examples to illustrate these functions:

Nutrient Cycling: Nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus move through ecosystems in cycles. For example, in a forest ecosystem, fallen leaves decompose on the forest floor, releasing nutrients into the soil. These nutrients are then taken up by plants, incorporated into their tissues, and eventually returned to the soil through litterfall or decomposition when the plants die. This continuous cycling of nutrients ensures the availability of essential elements for the growth of organisms within the ecosystem.

Primary Production: Primary production refers to the synthesis of organic compounds by photosynthetic organisms, mainly plants, using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. In aquatic ecosystems, phytoplankton perform the majority of primary production, converting solar energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. This energy is then transferred through the food web to other organisms, supporting the entire ecosystem.

Decomposition: Decomposition is the breakdown of organic matter by decomposers such as bacteria, fungi, and detritivores. For instance, dead plant material, animal carcasses, and feces provide a food source for decomposers. These organisms break down complex organic molecules into simpler forms, releasing nutrients back into the environment. Decomposition plays a crucial role in nutrient recycling and soil formation, influencing the productivity and health of ecosystems.

Energy Flow: Energy flows through ecosystems in a unidirectional manner, typically starting with the capture of solar energy by autotrophs (organisms capable of producing their own food). This energy is then transferred from one trophic level to another through consumption. For example, herbivores obtain energy by consuming plants, and then carnivores obtain energy by consuming herbivores. However, with each transfer of energy, some energy is lost as heat, limiting the length of food chains and the amount of energy available to higher trophic levels.

Understanding ecosystem functions is essential for assessing ecosystem health, predicting responses to environmental changes, and informing conservation and management strategies. By studying these functions, scientists can gain insights into the complex interactions that shape ecosystems and the services they provide to humanity.
