Q1. Explain Nyaya theory of inference.
The Nyaya school is one of the classical Indian schools of philosophy that developed a systematic approach to logic and epistemology. Nyaya is often associated with the Nyaya Sutras, an ancient text attributed to Gautama (also known as Akṣapāda), who is considered the founder of the Nyaya school. The Nyaya theory of inference is an essential aspect of their epistemological framework.
In Nyaya, inference (anumāna) is considered one of the means of valid knowledge (pramāṇa). The Nyaya theory of inference consists of five components:
- Pratijna (Proposition): This is the first step in the process of inference. It involves the explicit statement of the thesis or the proposition to be proved. For example, if the proposition is “There is fire on the mountain,” then this statement constitutes the pratijna.
- Hetu (Reason): Hetu is the second step and refers to the reason or the middle term that establishes a connection between the subject and the predicate of the proposition. In the example, the hetu would be “Where there is smoke, there is fire.”
- Udaharaṇa (Example): Udaharaṇa involves providing an example or instances that support the reason or hetu. In the given example, instances of seeing smoke on other occasions and finding fire can be cited as udaharaṇa.
- Upanaya (Application): Upanaya is the application of the hetu to the specific case at hand. It involves showing how the reason or hetu is applicable to the current situation. In the example, it would involve demonstrating that the observed smoke on the mountain is due to fire.
- Nigamana (Conclusion): Nigamana is the final step in the process of inference, where the conclusion is drawn based on the acceptance of the hetu. In the example, the conclusion would be that there is indeed fire on the mountain.
The Nyaya theory of inference is designed to establish a valid and reliable method of reasoning, emphasizing the importance of logical consistency and empirical observation. It provides a structured approach to draw valid inferences and is considered a foundational aspect of Nyaya epistemology.
